Deadly shipwrecks in the Mediterranean are not unavoidable ! « Fatal shipwrecks in the Mediterranean can be avoided! »
On Sunday 12 April 2015, 400 people lost their lives in a shipwreck off the Italian coasts. The number of victims outnumbers by far the tragic events of October 2013, when 366 migrants drowned near Lampedusa.
At the gates of Europe, in Italy as well as on the Greek islands, migrants are subjected to arbitrary and dangerous border controls and security measures that put their lives at risk.
As the Council is set to debate the events which occurred near Lampedusa causing the death of at least 300 people, we are writing to call on the EU and its member states to take urgent measures to prevent further loss of life.
The new shipwreck of a boat in which at least 300 passengers perished or disappeared very near to Lampedusa, was not caused by fate. In 2010, in the same place, two simultaneous shipwrecks resulted in close to 400 victims.
The European Association for the Defense of Human Rights wishes to publicly express its support for the calls issued by the European Trade Union Confederation for mobilization on November 14th in many European Union countries.
